The TM symbol does not just stand for trademark, but it is often used in conjunction with unregistered marks (that is, terms, slogans, logos, or other indications that are not registered) so that potential infringers know that the mark is protected under common law trademark laws, but not registered. As you can see in the following example, the superscript is typically used to indicate this: TM.
